Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS)

The Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) provides lifetime pension benefits, long-term disability and retiree health insurance to educators and municipal state employees in Arizona. Contributions are deducted from your paycheck, and registration with ASRS is required for account security and access to online tools.

ASRS differs from a 401(k) by offering a lifetime pension not based on account balance. Most retirees receive more in benefits than they contributed! For more information, visit ASRS Members.

Beginning July 1, 2024, the total contribution rate is 12.27% (12.12% pre-tax for pension and health benefits, 0.15% post-tax for disability). Edkey matches 100% of your contribution rate.

ASRS membership is mandatory for eligible employees, with some exceptions. Employees aged 65+ can waive membership within 30 days, and those working less than 20 hours a week for fewer than 20 weeks in a fiscal year may be exempt.
